Landos’s Bespin apartment is located on the gas planet Bespin, positioned on the outer rim of the Star Wars galaxy. During Han Solo's visit to Bespin, he was granted to stay in one of Lando's many luxury apartments within the capital. The luxury apartment includes a roomy arena to roam about, high-class décor, and natural lighting. I can imagine this apartment is popular with high net-worth individuals within the Star Wars Galaxy.
The bespin apartment was modeled within Maya with only a handful of images coming from the only scene in the Empire Strikes Back. Fortunately, this scene plays within mostly wide-angle shots which allowed me to snap screenshots of the room. I expanded on the furniture décor by modeling more abstract sculptures and symmetrically blocking them within the room. The general modeling process was straightforward, indicating that the texturing process would bring it to life.
From a color and texture perspective, the Bespin apartment is mainly plain white with little texture. To spice up the room and decided to add additional wall patterns and more defined marble tile to the floor. The result gives the room more character and taste. The majority of the room was textured with procedural tiling methods within all channels. Minimal manual painting was needed due to static camera placement.
The lighting aspect of this project was easily the hardest. When environments have large open spaces for light to travel, multiple lighting options become possible. After rearranging the lights about 10 times, I finally decided to create a daytime and sunset lighting setup to show how the room can give off a different vibe with opposite lighting. The room was lit with one large area light and 3-4 additional area lights for further illumination.
The Unreal Engine is an incredibly powerful tool and has an infinite level of potential. I cannot wait to see what Epic Games has planned for the Unreal Engine. I enjoy the real-time feedback of environment building and the realism that lumen brings to my work. I love environment building within Unreal and I am looking forward to building larger and more elaborate work in 2024!
