In the Chronicles of Narnia The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. The Stone Table is regarded as one of the most sacred places in Narnia. After Aslan is killed by the White Witch, he is resurrected by the use of Deep Magic.
I challenged myself to dig deep into creating an organic scene and taking my sculpting skills to the next level.
During my planning phase, I discovered that adding an icy early spring feel would bring new life to the environment instead of a purely dry mountain range. I have always noticed that the combination of great lighting, and water's reflective properties can easily transform the look of a scene.
All 7 pillars were hand sculpted from film references using Zbrush Dynamesh. Each pillar was decimated and baked with high poly details. The cracked stone table was modeled in Maya and additional details were added in sculpting. A handful of boulders were sculpted and scattered around the ruins.
Tillable textures were used to texture all stone assets. Vertex painting was used to blend between the Nordic green moss, melting snow, and stone.
All foliage was painted onto the landscape surface using the unreal engine's foliage mode. I used larger trees on the perimeter of the environment to help create a forest corridor, preventing large boring open spaces.
A simple World Machine Mountain Range was used to help create the scenic background of Narnia. Additional Sun & Sky tweaking was done within the Ultra Dynamic Sky Plugin to help sell the dramatic lighting and feel.
Overall I was quite happy with the final result of this project. Building convincing nature levels are no easy task, but with great art fundamentals you can create something great!
